I discovered this pub with my work colleagues one evening and have been back several times since. Just off Brick Lane, the Pride of Spitalfields is an old school boozer – its a CAMRA member and serves real ales (London Pride, ESB, Crouch Vale’s Brewers Gold, Fullers, various other guest ones). I’ve seen the pub cat a few times which wanders around the dusty carpet and small wooden tables, and eaten there for lunch with my friend Vasek – scampi chips and peas for around £3 (there was also ham, egg and chips for £3, sausage, egg and chips for £3, you get the picture). I quite like the fact that when I’ve asked for wine its taken them a few moments to locate a wine glass.
There’s an interesting mix of Bangladeshi restaurant owners from round the corner, East End cockney types who seem to know all the staff, and art school trendies, who maybe come for the authentic East End experience. Last time I was there on a Sunday afternoon there was a cockney knees up at the piano with a few old regulars and a young arty crowd led by the bassist from the Klaxons, with everyone spilling merrilly out onto the street to have a fag.
Definitely a nice pub to grab a table and have a proper chat during the week so you can avoid City types and East end trendies (especially as Vibe Bar and 93 Feet East are always full) or go along at the weekend to see what randomness ensues.
