The Loft, 67 Clapham High Street, SW4 7TG

Election night, Clapham.  While others were deciding the fate of the country, three blondes were drinking cocktails and planning something far more important – Lady B’s hen weekend.  And yes don’t worry, 2 cocktails, 1 beer and 3 courses later, we staggered off home to exercise our democratic rights, hic.

I have written previously about The Loft – it won Time Out best bar in 2008 and always had great cocktails and a fantastic New-York-Warehouse-style bar, but I thought the food really let it down after a couple of disappointing meals.  However, they seem to have sorted it out which is great news.

Thursday night and the bar was busy but not too full.  There were more diners than normal although they have a long way to go to be buzzing.  Humours were improved greatly by the offer of a free half pint of Blue Moon beer (veh nice) and the offer of 2-for-1 cocktails before 8pm and subsequent persuasion that it would be best to get 2 each rather than sharing.

All this booze cost me £7.50 total, we like

On to the food, where I was pleasantly surprised.  Dinner on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is 2 courses for £12 which is great value for money, and the food was really good.  I started with pan-fried squid with chilli, parsley and garlic which was light, spicy and tasty; and followed with a delicious seabass fillet with garlic spinach, grilled asparagus and sunblush tomato dressing.  The fish was perfectly cooked and really tender.  Apparently the steak was excellent too.  Then we demolished much of Pixie’s eton mess cheesecake (sorry love) which was delicious.

We had to rush off to vote, but I had a great night – good music (remember some good old Johnny Cash), cool venue, lovely cocktails and tasty food.  Oh and fabulous company. Amazingly, 2 courses and 2 cocktails was only £23 each so excellent value.  I’ll definitely be going back – you can book through toptable and there’s also 50% off Sunday roasts.
